It's not what you're thinking. There are several things that I am grieving over this week, since as part of the food stamp challenge I can't afford them: eggs, cheese, meat. I've also given up my morning coffee for now, because it's not part of my budget and I can't afford cream (I will not drink coffee without cream).
I've been meaning to make the switch to tap water at work for a while now, and since as part of my food stamp challenge I am not allowed to consume free food or beverages at work, bring on the fluoride!
My other terrible habit I've been meaning to break is my 2pm Coke Zero addiction (yes, there is an exact time that I enjoy this treat everyday). Aspartame has been deemed safe to consume, but I still just feel gross about drinking that much soft drink on a weekly basis.
So, tap water it is. Maybe I'll get crazy and splurge on a lemon to add just to switch things up a bit.
I'll have an update later on how Day 2 of my food stamp challenge is going. So far, I feel confident that I won't starve, however the stress of preparing and planning to make sure that doesn't happen (on top of everything else going on in my life) is something I could really do without.

Aspartame was discovered in 1965 by James M. Schlatter, a chemist working for G.D. Searle & Company. Schlatter had synthesized aspartame in the course of producing an antiulcer drug candidate. He accidentally discovered its sweet taste when he licked his finger, which had become contaminated with aspartame, to lift up a piece of paper.[17][18]
We make good use of our Brita filter at home, but at work I am terribly guilty of consuming insane amounts of bottled water and get this....I don't even recycle the bottles. For shame!
THE HORROR!!!!
:-)
Seriously, BPA in plastic bottles is a known hormone disrupter. That might be reason enough for you to ditch the plastic water bottles. Attempts to ban BPA have been fought by corporate interests but I think a ban is inevitable. You can read about it here:

It was hard for me to ditch the plastic in our house since it's in EVERYTHING. First thing I did was get a glass water bottle. I fill it with filtered water (we have a water filter on our tap), and keep it in the fridge. Then I got one of those a metal water containers, which I also fill up and keep in the fridge. So I can always have filtered water not in a toxic plastic water bottle. You might try getting one of those.
The tap water in Nashville tastes like crap unless it's filtered. That's just the reality. And ... what the heck is that stuff floating around in it? No, wait -- don't answer that.
{shudders}
Removing the other plastic from the kitchen was harder and more expensive. But I tossed all of the Tupperware and other plastic storage containers and replaced them with glass. And naturally we don't use plastic cups or anything like that.
Once you are finished with your food stamp challenge you might want to look into ditching the plastic.
Baby steps! We definitely keep filtered water in the fridge at home. The problem is at the office, where I've kicked the water bottle habit but I still drink tap water from a plastic solo cup. I reuse the same one over and over again, but I may just have to get a metal bottle to keep here.
Here's a SUPER AWESOME use for a plastic soda bottle! I stumbled across this short video and thought of your post.
:-)
(And seriously ... get a Kleen Kanteen and take it to work .. your body will thank you!)
