South Nashville at Home: My Home

Now I'm not saying that you have to tear a house down to it's roots and build it back up again in order to feel a deep connection to the place that you live, but because that's pretty much what we did, I have had the opportunity to form a personal relationship with just about every nook, corner, crack and crevice of this house (Edited to add cranny).

You can check out what the place looked like just before we bought it in yesterday's post.

Just to give you an idea, here are a few in between shots, in no particular order:

We Can Do It!
The Bathroom
The Kitchen

Mom and Dad working the kitchen.

Even my lil bro got in on the action.

I edited out the NSFW part of this photo. You're welcome.
The deck only took us 2 whole years to complete.
And here is where we are today. Like I said yesterday, we learned a lot through trial and error. Not everything worked for us the first time around. For instance, nearly every room in the house is on its second paint color. There was also the time when we were replacing the attic ladder and Jason got stuck in the attic and I started crying because I wasn't strong enough to pry the new door open. He did eventually get out. But just so you know, I think we both learned a lesson that day.

And there are still several things to work out, like the kitchen tile that we didn't really lay correctly and as you'll see in the video, we still haven't put a door on one of the closets. I apologize for the shakiness, I blame the flipcam. Anyway, we are pretty proud of our creation, and that's a big reason why I wanted to share it with you.

Well done. You two are examples of Extreme do-it-yourselfers, and when you say that you renovated the house it means YOU renovated the house. It’s this kind of enterprising spirit that causes neighborhoods to change for the better, house by house. I am also slowly renovating my house on Hutton Dr and had the same bathroom floor issues as you. What started as a shower replacement ended up in a full-blown floor to ceiling gutting and redo.

Is your house a former rental? One thing our area has too many of is rental houses owned by cheap landlords who “fix” problems by covering them up.

Thanks! I was telling someone yesterday that it's a little weird having a whole weekend where we don't have a "project".

It wasn't a rental (although there are a few slumlord type houses on my street). I don't know how someone can go through all of that trouble to purchase a house and then let it fall into such disrepair while LIVING there. But then again, I don't know the state of the previous owner. I've heard from neighbors that he was mentally ill and his wife had left him.

A few weeks after we had purchased the house, I came home from work to find him sitting on the front porch waiting for the mailman to deliver his paycheck. So, I do wonder about him from time to time.
